Ron Johnson attacks the Democrats’ “fringe agenda” in his speech at the RNC

Wisconsin State Senator Ron Johnson opened a party convention in Milwaukee on Monday evening, which was billed as a party unity convention, by sharply criticizing the Democrats.

The Democratic Party, Johnson said as he welcomed Republican delegates in Wisconsin, is the party of “open borders, reckless spending, weaponized government and weakness on the world stage.”

He called the Democrats’ agenda “fringe” and attacked them for discussing gender issues. “Vice President Harris and President Biden,” Johnson said, “have made our lives more uncertain and more expensive.”

Johnson’s nearly four-minute speech was the opening event of a nominating convention in Milwaukee, where Republicans plan to focus on the theme of “unity” after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania left one participant dead and the former president grazed by a bullet.

After the shooting, Trump said he changed his speech to the upcoming convention to focus on that message, after originally planning to focus on Biden and his policies.

However, Johnson attacked the Democrats when he advocated Republican governance.

“We have repaired the damage the Democrats have done before, and we will do it again,” Johnson said, noting that Republicans want smaller government, less regulation and securing the border.

After his speech, a Johnson aide told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the speech Johnson read was not the final version he intended to deliver.

Johnson began his final speech with the words: “We should all heed President Trump’s call for unity, strength and resolve,” the adviser said. And he read a line that he did not want in the final version: “The Democrats’ agenda today, their policies, are a clear and present danger to America, to our institutions, our values and our people.”

Johnson had told the Journal Sentinel earlier that day that he was glad Trump changed his speech to one of unity, but said Republicans would continue to “pursue their ideology and policies, which are disruptive.”
