The alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl by a police officer in Lagos, Nigeria, is sparking outrage. The public is demanding justice and police reform. Authorities are being criticized for alleged cover-ups. The case raises questions of accountability and protection from sexual violence within law enforcement. Social media is awash with calls for action.

A 17-year-old girl in Lagos State was allegedly raped at Ogudu Police Station by a police officer who promised to recover her stolen phone. The incident sparked outrage and calls for justice across Nigeria. According to the victim, the police officer lured her into his office, locked the door and threatened her with a gun before sexually assaulting her. The teenager’s mother claims the police are trying to cover up the allegation, while the suspect’s family is pleading for the case to be dropped due to his impending retirement.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police, referred inquiries for complaints about police operations to specific telephone numbers, but his attempts to investigate the matter were met with little response.

The public reaction was swift and furious. On social media, users expressed shock and disgust, with many calling for immediate action and justice. Comments ranged from “madness” to “this is so heartbreaking,” reflecting widespread outrage.

Several users tagged @Lagosdsva, presumably to alert the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, while others called on the Minister of Women Affairs to take responsibility in the case.

Some commentators criticised the system that allows such incidents to happen, with one saying: “Things that can only happen in Naija.” Others expressed frustration at the alleged attempts to cover up the crime and argued that those pleading on behalf of the officer should also be prosecuted.
