Tropical Storm Beryl: School closures in Houston and southeast Texas

Some schools in southeast Texas are taking steps before Tropical Storm Beryl makes landfall along the coast.

HOUSTON — As Tropical Storm Beryl approaches the Texas coast and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane, some schools are already taking action.

Beryl is expected to make landfall somewhere along the Texas coast early Monday morning as a Category 1 storm. The forecast cone extends to include parts of southeast Texas and Matagorda Bay. The storm is expected to bring several inches of rain to the Greater Houston area.

A storm watch has also been issued for much of the Texas coastline.

Closure of UHV Victoria

Friday afternoon, University of Houston Victoria Campus announced the cancellation of classes on Monday in anticipation of the storm.

“This closure is being conducted as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our students, staff and faculty,” the school wrote in an alert.

The school said it planned to provide an update on its situation on Monday afternoon.

Brazosport College Closure

In addition, Brazosport College Lake Jackson School canceled all classes and activities Monday. The school said that included the Bill & Julia May Children’s Center.

“We encourage everyone to take precautions and prepare for high winds and rain that could affect our area,” the school said in its closure announcement.

Brazosport College said it will post more updates on its website and social media pages.

This list will be updated as we become aware of new closures. If you think a school closure should be added to the list, please email us at [email protected].
