Former 49ers DB Tashaun Gipson suspended for six NFL games

Former San Francisco 49ers safety Tashaun Gipson is looking for an NFL team to play for. That task just got a little more difficult. Gipson is suspended for six NFL games, according to KPRC News. The reason for the suspension is unclear.

Gipson has played a key role in the 49ers’ defense over the past few seasons, helping the team reach the Super Bowl last year, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Gipson has started 34 games with San Francisco over the past two seasons. Although he is a free agent, there have been rumors that the 49ers are looking to re-sign the defensive back. It is unclear if the team will still push for a deal with him.

In the 2023 season, Gipson had one sack, one interception and three passes defensed. He also had 60 total tackles. During the postseason, he made 12 solo stops and played many snaps en route to the Super Bowl. The safety has been playing in the NFL since 2012. He played for the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears before coming to the Bay in 2022.

In his NFL career, the safety has a total of 684 tackles, 33 interceptions and 2.5 sacks.

Will the 49ers try to re-sign Gipson?

The 49ers are looking to win the Super Bowl after another disappointing showing in the championship game last season. The franchise has lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL title game twice since 2020. The window for the franchise to keep its core group of players together may be closing, and re-signing Gipson would certainly be a logical option.

However, the 49ers have a lot of players in their secondary, so the safety may not be on the field as often as he has been the past two years. The franchise also used the NFL Draft to add defensive backfield reinforcements. San Francisco drafted cornerback Renardo Green from Florida State in the second round. The team then used a fourth-round pick on safety Malik Mustapha from Wake Forest. There are certainly a lot of players in San Francisco’s secondary.

Despite the suspension, it’s entirely possible that an NFL team could snap up the veteran. He would be a strong addition to any team looking for more depth in their pass defense. Gipson was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014. One team that could immediately benefit from his presence in the defensive backfield is the Washington Commanders. Washington struggled tremendously with their pass defense last season, and a versatile playmaker like Gipson could add instant leadership and experience to the young team.

Time will tell what becomes of this veteran safety. He can clearly play, so the question is whether a team will give him a chance. A suspension is never a good thing, of course. However, six games gives Gipson a chance to return to the field this season and have plenty of time to prove himself.
