Missing in Greece: Search for Albert Calibet, retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, called off, last seen on the island of Amorgos

The independent search for a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy who disappeared in Greece has been called off, according to the missing man’s brother.

Oliver Calibet expressed his frustration at the lack of support from the US and Greek governments in the search for his brother Albert.

The video in the player above is from an earlier report on the search.

And since there is still no trace of his brother’s body after almost three weeks, he suspects a crime.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of our search for our beloved Albert,” wrote Oliver Calibet. “Despite our tireless efforts and determination, Albert remains missing. I deeply fear that a crime has been committed as we have found no sign of Albert anywhere on the island.”

Albert Calibet, 59, of Hermosa Beach, was reported missing June 11 after he went hiking on the Greek island of Amorgos on a hot day and then failed to show up for lunch with a friend.

A retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has disappeared during an extreme heat wave in Greece.

Albert’s girlfriend and brother flew to Greece to search for him in person after receiving no help from the Greek government and the U.S. Embassy. Volunteers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also joined the search.

“During this ordeal, we encountered numerous obstacles and roadblocks put in place by the Greek authorities, which hampered our search and added to our suffering. We received little help from the US Embassy. Fearing for our own health and safety, we left the island; the endless walking around the island took a huge toll on our bodies.”

Among the obstacles, he said, was being denied access to cell tower data.

In recent weeks there have been at least five reports of the disappearance or death of foreign visitors to Greek islands.
