Buffalo Sabers select 18-year-old in first round of NHL draft

The Buffalo Sabers made no major moves in the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday night.

Earlier in the week, they traded the 11th overall pick in the draft to San Jose for the 14th overall pick and the 42nd overall pick, which is in the 2nd round.

Many Buffalo Sabres fans were hoping the Sabres would use some of those draft picks and young prospects in their farm system to make draft-day deals and add veteran players to the team.

That didn’t happen, at least not in the first round. The Sabres didn’t make another move and ended up selecting Konsta Helenius with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the NHL Draft.

WHO IS KONSTA HELENIUS?

Helenius is a Finnish center who has been playing in the Finnish Elite League for two seasons. During his career, he scored 17 goals and added 30 assists for a total of 47 points in 84 games.

HOW MANY DRAFT CHOICES DO THE SABERS STILL HAVE?

In the first round of the NHL Draft, which takes place Friday night, the Sabers still have several picks to make over the next six rounds. They have two second-round picks, a third-round pick, two fourth-round picks, then a fifth, sixth and seventh round pick.

ARE THE BUFFALO SABERS MAKING A TRADE?

There are a lot of rumors that the Sabers are trying to trade Jeff Skinner. If they can’t reach a deal today, they could end up buying out his contract. The Sabers are looking to add some veterans to the team, so we could see some trades made during the second day of the NHL Draft.
