The 19-year-old driver was drag racing when he struck and killed a man on a bicycle, Syracuse police said

Syracuse, NY – A 19-year-old driver was speeding while racing another car in Syracuse last month when his vehicle struck and killed a man on an electric bicycle, according to police.

According to court records, the driver, Joshua Shutles, was arrested Tuesday and charged with manslaughter.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Municipal Court, Jermaine Sterling, 46, of Syracuse died after being struck by Shutles’ vehicle on April 15.

Shuttles was driving a 2022 Nissan Altima north on Almond Street around 12:03 a.m. April 15, police said in the complaint. Shultes began racing a gray sedan on the same road, driving 25 miles per hour over the speed limit, reports said.

Sterling was riding an electric bicycle when he turned left onto Catherine Street from Erie Boulevard East, police said. As he turned left, he was struck as Shuttles ran a red light, police said. Shultes had also previously been run at another red light, police said.

Sterling suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he died, police said.

Shuttles remained at the scene, cooperated with police and drunkenness does not appear to have played a role in the accident, they said.

Shutles was arraigned Wednesday morning in City Court.

In addition to manslaughter, he was issued tickets for speeding, participating in a speed contest, failing to stop at a red light and reckless driving.

His bond was set at $1 million bond or $750,000 cash. He is being held at the Justice Center Jail.

According to his family, Sterling attended Nottingham High School and lived in Syracuse his entire life.
