Kanakuk Kamps faces another lawsuit from a victim of sexual abuse

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – One of the largest Christian camps in the country, attended by many Middle Tennessee youth, is facing another lawsuit from a victim of sexual abuse.

Andrew Summersett, 37, filed the lawsuit against Branson-based Kanakuk Kamps on June 24.

Summerset reports that he was sexually abused by Peter “Pete” Newman, who was sentenced to two life sentences and 30 years in prison in 2010 for sexually abusing Kanakuk visitors.

Summersett made fraud allegations in the lawsuit, claiming that Kanakuk intentionally omitted key information about Newman’s sexual abuse of children.

Court records show that Summerset did not file a claim for damages against Kanakuk because of these omissions.

The law firm of Monsees and Mayer is one of the legal teams representing Summersett and also represented Logan Yandell of Hendersonville in Yandell’s lawsuit against Kanakuk.

Monsee and Mayer’s attorney, Robert Thrasher, told WSMV4’s Holly Thompson, “Another victim of Pete Newman has come forward after learning of new revelations about the scope and extent of Pete Newman’s abuse and what knowledge Kanakuk had and when they had it. Based on the new evidence, Andrew Summerset is pursuing claims that he would have made in 2009 had he had that knowledge.”
