Co-director of FBC Springfield VBS killed in traffic accident

By HENRY DURAND, The Christian Index

SPRINGFIELD, Georgia – The First Baptist Church of Springfield suffered a tragic loss Monday when one of its VBS directors was killed in a traffic accident.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Department reported on its Facebook page that emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of McCall Road and Highway 21 in Springfield. Two passengers in a pickup truck were taken to the hospital and the driver of the other vehicle, Laura Devisscher, was killed.

As the church grapples with the loss, Pastor Eric Green shared the news that VBS scheduled for next week will be canceled this year.

Krista Staton, children’s ministry consultant for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, said the church hosted one of the board’s VBS trainings this year and asked for prayers for the church and pastor as they cope with the loss.

The church announced on its Facebook page that it would hold a prayer event open to the entire congregation on Wednesday, June 19, at 6 p.m. In this time of “great sorrow and overwhelming need, the best thing we can do is seek the Lord in prayer,” the post said.

Please pray for family and friends, church and community as they navigate the coming days and months.
