BEDFORD, NH — New Hampshire State Police and Bedford Fire responded to a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision at the Bedford Toll Plaza on Tuesday.

When emergency crews arrived on scene at 10:15 a.m., they found a pickup truck that had crashed into the toll booth barrier and then collided with an SUV that was traveling north through the toll booth.

Two people in the BMW SUV were seriously trapped and Bedford firefighters immediately began rescue efforts and also requested an ambulance from Merrimack Fire Rescue.

Firefighters freed two people with serious injuries from the SUV and took them to the hospital. Further details on the injuries are not currently available. The driver of the pickup truck was medically examined on site and did not appear to have suffered serious injuries in the accident. He was taken to the hospital for further examination.

The initial investigation has revealed that a maroon Ford F-250 pickup truck, driven by Scott Wein, 48, of Loudon, was traveling southbound just before the Bedford Toll Plaza when the pickup crossed the median and briefly continued southbound in a lane that was heading north. When the pickup truck traveled the wrong way and moved into the leftmost lane on the north side of the toll road, it collided head-on with a white BMW X3, according to state police.

Wein, the driver of the BMW, Peter Kemeny, 68, of Quebec, Canada, and Kemeny’s passenger, Daphna Vermes, 67, also of Canada, suffered serious injuries. All three were taken to Elliot Hospital in Manchester.

The structure at the toll plaza was severely damaged; no one at the toll plaza was injured and the structure was inspected by NH Dot personnel.

Granite State Dog Recovery is helping to locate a dog that jumped out of the pickup truck and ran from the scene of the accident. The dog is described as a pit bull-mastiff mix.

They ask people to be careful when driving in the area and point out that the dog is very shy and will likely run away. He also doesn’t like other dogs.

If you find the dog or have any information, call Granite State Dog Recovery at 1-855-639-5678.

State police kept most of the toll plaza lanes open and closed two lanes in each direction, causing minor traffic congestion.

Members of the state police accident investigation team are on site and are working on documenting the accident.

This is the second serious accident at the Bedford toll plaza in less than a week. On Thursday, a Nashua man died when the Mercedes he was driving crashed into the southbound guardrail of the toll plaza.

All aspects of the accident remain under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has additional information that could assist in the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Shane Mason at (603) 223-8517 or [email protected].
