Nearby Iranian ship ignores distress call from ship attacked by Houthis

The ship Anna Meta responded to a distress call from Verbena, a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned and Polish-operated bulk carrier, on Saturday and brought the crew to safety.

The ship was attacked by Yemen-backed Houthis with cruise missiles in the Gulf of Aden last week, and the distress call indicated that Verbena was abandoning ship, the U.S. Central Command said in an X-post Saturday night. The ship’s crew struggled to contain fires after the attack.

The report further stated that at the time of the distress call, an Iranian frigate was eight nautical miles away from the ship and responded.

“This continued malicious and reckless behavior by the Iran-backed Houthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of sailors in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” the statement added.
