Buffalo man charged with murder in fatal shooting outside Hertel Avenue bar

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The suspect in the fatal shooting outside a Hertel Avenue bar in May has been charged with murder.

The Erie County Prosecutor’s Office announced that William Quinones, 27, of Buffalo, was arraigned Monday in state Supreme Court on an indictment charging him with one count of murder in the second degree and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges and is being held without bail.

Quiniones is accused of shooting and killing Madjid Elbert, 46, on May 7 outside Del Denby Tavern on Hertel Avenue.

Authorities at the time said evidence showed Elbert knew his attacker and that they had interacted earlier inside the bar.

Elbert was a chef who worked at many restaurants and establishments around Buffalo, including as a supervisor at the Erie County Medical Center cafeteria and at the former Pano’s on Elmwood Avenue.

His family said he dreamed of one day owning his own food truck.

His niece, Latryse Anderson, told 7 News last month that her family was devastated and had pleaded for the killer to surrender.

“You left a family hurt,” Anderson told 7 News. “We cry…we forgive you, just give us peace. Surrender.”

Quinones is expected to return July 12 for a pretrial conference. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the highest charge.
