Weekend shooting injures 16-year-old girl in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE – Fort Pierce police say police are investigating a shooting incident outside a community center over the weekend that left a 16-year-old girl injured.

At around 8:09 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to the area of North 13th Street and Avenue M for a report of shootings.

Investigators determined that an altercation had occurred outside the Lincoln Park Community Center, during which the teen sustained gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. She was treated and released from HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.

Further information was not initially available on Monday.

The weekend’s incident follows three consecutive days of shootings in Fort Pierce that ended on May 27 – Memorial Day – when at least eight people were injured by gunfire and two people have been charged.

The first of these three shootings apparently occurred early in the morning of May 25, when police were called to the 1800 block of Avenue G for a possible gunshot wound.

According to police, an investigation revealed that a gathering was taking place at the time in an open area in the 1800 block of Avenue G. Five people between the ages of 15 and 20 suffered gunshot wounds (non-fatal).

A woman who lives in the area, Takisha Brianvil, said she believed a high school graduation party was taking place on Avenue G between North 18th and North 19th streets next to a mango tree. She said people scattered after the shooting.

“The only thing I heard was a lot of gunshots and kids running into my house. It’s just crazy,” Brianvil said.

A surveillance video she provided showed a rapid succession of gunshots.
