Hazmat incident in Buellton leads to curfew and road closures | Local news

A hazardous materials incident in Buellton led to a curfew for some businesses and the temporary closure of Industrial Way on Sunday.

Santa Barbara County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and the fire department’s hazardous materials team responded shortly after 11 a.m. to 45 Industrial Way, where a large outdoor carbon dioxide tank was leaking, Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

The incident occurred at the Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. facility.

Five employees were evacuated from the company, but none of them reported any health complaints, Safechuck said.

A curfew has been imposed on surrounding shops, he added.

Safechuck said crews, working in Level A protective suits, turned off a valve to isolate the 10,000-gallon CO₂ tank.

Emergency personnel deployed air monitors inside and outside the facility to ensure all sensors measured normal atmospheric levels, Safechuck said, adding that the indication for the need to create shelters had been lifted.

Industrial Way on Highway 246 was closed for about 45 minutes because of the incident, he added.
