State prison inmate murder under investigation | Latest News

PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Maryland State Police investigators continue to investigate the death of a state prison inmate in Somerset County.

Maryland State Police report that the inmate, identified as 49-year-old Eugene Stanford, was pronounced dead by emergency medical services. Stanford was a state prison inmate serving his sentence at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Princess Anne.

State police say a suspect, also an inmate, has been identified. The suspect has not been identified at this time. Officials say he will not be identified until charges are filed.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections Internal Investigations Unit regarding the death of an inmate that occurred yesterday at approximately 3:30 p.m. Investigators informed State Police that Eugene Stanford’s autopsy revealed “foul play.” His death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

According to the Maryland State Police, homicide detectives are continuing the investigation. They say, “Once completed, the investigation will be submitted to the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office for review for charging.”
