Trump attacks E. Jean Carroll again and calls his enemies “human scum”

Top line

Former President Donald Trump attacked E. Jean Carroll and others involved in his numerous legal battles in a Memorial Day post on Truth Social — despite the threat of another possible defamation suit since Trump already owes Carroll tens of millions.

Key data

Trump began his message on Monday by saying, “Happy Memorial Day, everyone,” before launching into a tirade against his enemies, the “human scum,” the “radical left,” and key figures involved in his trials, past and present.

Trump said he had “never met Carroll before” – a claim he has repeatedly reiterated – and said, “A quick handshake at a celebrity event 25 years ago doesn’t count!”

The former president went on to say that Carroll “did not know when the so-called event occurred” (in an opinion piece accusing Trump of assault, she wrote “fall 1995 or spring 1996”), she did not file a police report, and she “did not produce the ‘dress’ she threatened me with” – a reference to Judge Lewis Kaplan’s refusal to conduct a DNA test in Carroll’s first trial against Trump.

After Carroll’s recent trial, she and her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, have repeatedly indicated that they might sue Trump again if he continues to defame her.

Kaplan reiterated those statements in an email to Forbes, saying, “We have said several times since the last jury verdict in January that all options are on the table. And that remains true today – all options are on the table.”

A representative for Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment.

Big number

$91.6 million. That’s how much Trump posted as bail in March to guarantee that he would pay the $83.3 million judgment plus interest from one of Carroll’s defamation lawsuits against Trump.

Important background

In 2019, Carroll accused Trump of sexually harassing her in the 1990s, and filed a defamation lawsuit in November of that year after the former president said he did not know her and she was not his “type.” In November 2022, she filed a second defamation lawsuit alleging libel and sexual assault. A jury found Trump guilty of defamation and sexual assault last May and ordered him to pay Carroll $5 million in damages, but dismissed the rape allegation. The first defamation lawsuit went to trial in January, and Trump was ordered to pay Carroll an additional $83.3 million in damages. In late April, Kaplan affirmed the verdict and denied Trump’s request for a retrial in Carroll’s case.

tangent

The jury in the hush money trial against Trump is scheduled to begin deliberations on Wednesday. Trump is accused of 34 counts of falsifying business records.
