One dead and two injured after traffic accident in Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kansas – One person died and two others were injured in a car crash Sunday morning in Johnson County.

At around 8 a.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was called to a two-vehicle crash near southbound I-35/Sunflower Road, forcing officers to close the highway.


A vehicle with one passenger collided with a vehicle with three passengers. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

She was identified as 76-year-old Sherry L. Pena.

The other two passengers were a 45-year-old woman and a six-year-old man. They were taken to hospital in critical condition. Both are expected to survive.

Officers conducted a breathalyzer test on the driver of the vehicle at fault at the scene of the accident. He was arrested and taken to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center.
