A patrol car was hit during a vehicle stop on I-84 in Middlebury

A Connecticut State Police patrol car was struck during a routine vehicle stop in Middlebury on Friday.

It happened at 11:18 p.m. on I-84 East near Exit 17. According to state police, the patrol car and the Hyundai Sonata GLS/LX were both parked on the shoulder of the highway.

Authorities said the cruiser’s emergency lights were on.

A Toyota RAV4 struck the front driver’s side of the patrol car and collided with the rear of the Hyundai. The impact caused the Toyota to flip onto its roof.

The driver of the Toyota, Roberto Ayala-Salazar, and the driver of the Hyundai suffered minor injuries and were taken to Waterbury Hospital.

The state trooper also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Danbury Hospital.

State police believe Ayala-Salazar caused the accident because he failed to stay in the correct lane.

They say enforcement action is pending and the crash is under investigation.
