Maryland elementary school teacher accused of sexual abuse

After the school system became aware of the allegations, it fired the teacher from the school. Police believe there could be more victims.

SEVERNA PARK, Maryland – An elementary school teacher in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, is facing charges for allegedly sexually abusing at least eight of his students. Anne Arundel County police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.

Matthew Scott Banks Schlegel, 44, of Severna Park, was identified by students and school administrators as the accused teacher. After the school system became aware of the allegations against him, he was expelled from school.

As part of its investigation, Child Protective Services interviewed several children who claimed to be victims of Schlegel’s abuse.

On Wednesday, Schlegel was charged with multiple crimes ranging from second-degree assault to sexual abuse of a child.

He was found at his home on Thursday and taken into custody.

Although Schlegel was arrested, investigators believe there may be more victims and encourage anyone with additional information or other potential victims to call the TipLine at 410-222-4733. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous is asked to call the Anne Arundel County Police Tipline at 410-222-4700.
