Sentencing in Oxford delayed after rape of 15-year-old girl

Anicet Mayela, 40, was due to be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday (May 14) for raping a young girl.

It was heard Mayela, of Desborough Crescent, Oxford, raped a girl between December 1 and December 31 last year.

However, the case was postponed until May 29.

Mayela, who once campaigned outside a detention center holding a sign that read “Migrants are not criminals,” is currently in custody awaiting sentencing.

The defendant fought to return to the Republic of Congo after arriving in the UK in 2004, claiming “his life was in danger”.

An attempt was made to deport him, but he was allegedly taken injured to an isolation cell near Heathrow Airport and then held at Campsfield House detention center in Kidlington.

A second attempt was made in May 2005, but it is believed that flight crew prevented the plane from taking off.

Mayela, a former business student, was subsequently granted residency after lawyers said deportation would violate his human rights.

He then began his campaign against deportation before the attack on the young girl in 2023.

It is unknown whether the conviction will affect his status.
