Police fatally shoot armed man on New York street

Police shot and killed a Brooklyn man who pointed a gun at another man on the street in East Flatbush overnight.

said NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey during a press conference that two officers in a squad car patrolling East Flatbush around 1:15 a.m. saw a man standing in the street pointing a gun at another man.

The officers exited their vehicle, approached the man standing at East 52nd Street and Church Avenue and ordered him to drop his weapon.

The man started running and one of the officers “briefly” stunned him with a Taser, Maddrey said.

“The man got back up, he still had the gun in his hand,” Maddrey said.

“He runs back on the sidewalk. He runs back to 52nd Street. The officers further command the man to drop his weapon and fire their weapons.”

After they fired their weapons, the man fell to the ground and officers subdued him, Maddrey added.

Officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before the man was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Maddrey did not provide the victim’s name, details about where he was shot or how many gunshot wounds he suffered.

Police said a passerby may have been grazed by officers’ bullets.

“Approximately an hour and a half after this incident, another man came to a local hospital with a graze wound and said he was near that area,” Maddrey said.

“So this will be part of the investigation to determine whether this man was actually hit at this location.”

The investigation is ongoing, Maddrey said.
