These former child stars have spoken out

The same colorful slapstick TV shows that had kids of the ’90s and ’00s laughing at their screens were secret nightmares for the kids who played them behind the scenes, according to the upcoming Investigation Discovery (ID) documentary “Quiet on Set.” dark side of children’s television.

The tell-all documentary is set to premiere Sunday and promises to take viewers behind the scenes of Nickelodeon’s golden age, exposing the toxic and even allegedly abusive environments in which some of the era’s biggest child stars allegedly worked.

The documentary, inspired by the investigative reporting of Business Insider’s Kate Taylor, features the voices of some former Nickelodeon royalty who have not previously spoken out publicly, most notably Drake Bell, who recently revealed the alleged sexual abuse he alleged suffered at the hands of former Nickelodeon dialogue trainer Brian Peck.

Some other familiar faces are expected to appear, such as Alexa Nikolas from “Zoe 101” and several cast members from “All That,” along with people who worked behind the cameras on the shows that defined children’s television of the time. While some Nick alumni like Nikolas have been vocal about their experiences for some time, others like Bell will be sharing their stories publicly for the first time.

Here’s what we know so far about who will be appearing in the documentary and who has already opened up about their lives behind the scenes on Nick.

  • Drake Bell from Drake & Josh, The Amanda Show.” – Drake Bell is expected to appear in the third part of the series. He has been making headlines recently due to allegations of sexual abuse by former Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck. Peck was arrested in August 2003 and convicted of lewd acts in 2004 with a Child, stemming from a 2001 incident, Bell had not previously revealed himself as a plaintiff in the 2004 case.

  • Alexa Nikolas from “Zoe 101” – Nikolas has already been very vocal about her experiences at Nickelodeon, appearing on social media, on podcasts, and in interviews with reporters. Nikolas has repeatedly alleged severe bullying and a toxic work environment on the set of Zoe 101. She left the show and Nickelodeon after the second season ended.

  • Giovonnie Samuels, Kyle Sullivan, Bryan Hearne and Katrina Johnson from “All That” – All prominent members of the “All That” cast, Samuels, Sullivan, Hearne and Johnson, also speak publicly for the first time about their experiences at Nickelodeon. In one scene, Hearne describes a “traumatizing” stunt in which he was covered in peanut butter and had to have dogs lick it off.

  • Marc Summers, host of “Double Dare” – Summers was the host and producer of the Nickelodeon game show “Double Dare” from 1986 to 1993. According to a press release from ID, Summers will speak alongside other adult cast members and even parents who have “tried to advocate for their children on these sets.”

In addition, producers, writers and other behind-the-scenes staff from shows such as “All That,” “The Amanda Show,” “Zoey 101,” “Sam & Cat,” “Drake & Josh” and “Victorious” will speak Doc, among other things.

“All That” director Virgil Fabian and “The Amanda Show” writers Jenny Kilgen and Christy Stratton are some of the characters who will appear behind the scenes, according to ID Channel.

Other former stars who have spoken out against Nickelodeon

Some big names associated with Nickelodeon’s popular shows will not appear in the documentary, but have spoken publicly about their time at the network in the past.

  • Jennette McCurdy from iCarly, Sam and Cat.” – McCurdy’s hit 2022 memoir, “I’m Glad My Mom Died,” addresses her experiences at Nickelodeon, which she described as overwhelmingly negative. She does not name a specific adult she worked under in the memoir, but she does speak of one character. She calls the character “The Creator,” alluding to his contribution to the unpleasant work environment on set and making specific allegations of misconduct . She also talked about turning down a $30,000 “hush money” offer from the network in exchange for never saying anything about her experiences.

  • Daniella Monet from “Victorious” – Monet spoke to Business Insider as part of the reveal, which inspired the upcoming document. She told reporter Kate Taylor that she felt the series had many overly sexualized components and that the characters’ outfits were “not age-appropriate.”

  • Angelique Bates from “All That” – Bates also spoke to Taylor as part of the BI investigation and claimed that Dan Schneider yelled at her until she cried.

  • Raquel Lee from “The Amanda Show” – Lee told Taylor that she was made to feel “disposable” and dehumanized, saying, among other things, “It’s not about being human. It’s not about being a child. They don’t care.”

  • Avan Jogia from “Victorious” – A TikTok became famous that seemingly confirmed rumors that Victorious’s website was partying, even though the performers were teenagers at the time. In it, he says that he doesn’t remember the storyline of a single episode of the series, but does remember partying hard “every night,” suggesting that alcohol was involved.

Here’s how to watch Quiet on Set

“Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV” will premiere Sunday, March 17 at 9pm ET on Investigation Discovery (ID). The four-episode series will air in two parts, with the second part arriving the following day on Monday, March 18, also at 9 p.m. ET

The ID Channel is available on some cable subscriptions and on live TV streaming services such as Fubo, DirecTV, Philo and Sling.

Upon release, it will also be available to stream on Max, Prime Video, Apple TV and The Roku Channel.
