University of Houston-Victoria honors outstanding students | Education

The University of Houston-Victoria’s Celebration of Scholars event honored outstanding students and faculty members Friday.

The event took place at the University of Houston-Victoria, and UH System alumna and regent Tammy Murphy spoke to students at the event.

“It is truly a privilege for me to be here this evening to offer my greetings and congratulations. Even though it has been a few years since I was in your shoes, I can empathize and I can relate to the many challenges and opportunities you have faced throughout your life’s journey,” Murphy said.

Among the professors recognized for their exceptional work was Humberto Hernández, assistant professor of biology in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. Humberto received a Teaching Excellence Award.

Aobo Jin, assistant professor of computer information science in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, received an award for excellence in research and scholarly activities.

Mark Ward, professor of communications in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, received an award for distinguished faculty service.

Among the students who received recognition for their outstanding academic achievements was Dave Garcia, who said he was thrilled to be recognized for his academic achievements.

“It means a lot. I was never really someone who put a lot of effort into my grades and homework at my previous school, Wharton County Junior College. I got a 3.04 GPA “Garcia said. “But when I got here, I started focusing more and trying harder and I started doing 4.0 semesters. Being recognized here and having this kind of celebration means a lot to me.”
