Construction workers were hospitalized after an accident in 1604

A beam fell onto the aerial work platform, throwing it to the ground and trapping the workers.

SAN ANTONIO – Two construction workers are in serious condition after their cherry picker bucket fell to the ground early Friday morning.

According to San Antonio police, the men were working on construction along Access Road 1604 and I-10 on the northwest side near RIM around 1 a.m

Crews have reportedly been working nightly on the major highway project.

According to police, the men were in a cherry picker bucket, lifting two metal beams into place and attempting to attach them to some concrete pillars when a chain holding one of the beams broke.

The beam fell onto the aerial work platform, throwing it to the ground and trapping the workers. According to authorities, the workers were rescued by the fire department.

The workers were taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation is working to review safety measures.

A TxDOT representative issued this statement:

“On May 10, 2024, at approximately 1 a.m., an incident occurred at the construction site of the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. An initial investigation into the incident found that contractors were removing a temporary support when it fell and hit an antenna. The temporary beam is used during formwork and is different from the large steel beams that permanently support the flyover ramp. Discussing the incident and reviewing safety protocols is TxDOT’s top priority and a full investigation is underway.”
