A Pakistani man has been arrested after a 16-year-old British girl was raped in the toilets of a bar in Crete – just meters from her parents.

The unnamed victim was holidaying on the Greek island and was enjoying an evening with her parents at a bar in tourist hotspot Malia when she left them to go to the toilet. She was then allegedly chased by the vile attacker before her ordeal began.

The girl and her mother later went to a local police station to report the crime. Police had previously reviewed video surveillance and suspected the attacker was a 28-year-old man from Pakistan.

The man quickly fled the scene and a manhunt was launched to bring him to justice. But Malian police were able to track him down using CCTV footage from the bar, reports Greek media Protothema. Police have since arrested and charged the man, who has not yet been named.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman previously said: “We are assisting a British man following an incident in Greece and are in contact with local authorities.”

It comes just weeks after a British woman reported that she was gang-raped by five men while on holiday in Cyprus after being “forcibly dragged” into a hotel room in the party resort of Ayia Napa. The tourist, who was 20 at the time of the alleged attack, was escorted to the Famagusta Criminal Court under police protection in February as she prepared to testify behind closed doors.

It was the first time the Briton had come face to face with the men since the suspects were identified in a police line-up last September. A police officer said: “She is incredibly brave. She walked in with her head held high.”

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Mallorca said: “The Guardia Civil in Calvià has arrested a 20-year-old Italian man as the suspected perpetrator of a sexual assault on a woman. The alleged victim and the suspect met in a night bar in Palmanova.

“When the bar closed, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the woman’s disorientation due to the amount of alcohol she had consumed to take her to the beach and rape her. The officers initiated an investigation and were able to identify and locate the suspected perpetrator.”
