One person died in dozens of forest fires in North Macedonia on Monday, authorities said. Thousands of hectares of forest have been destroyed since the beginning of July.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 41 forest fires had been recorded, mainly in the eastern parts of the country.

The fires have reached twelve already abandoned villages and destroyed several houses. Inhabited villages have been evacuated by the authorities.

The director of the country’s crisis management center, Stojance Angelov, said a male resident of Kokosinje, near the northern city of Kumanovo, had died.

“The fires started almost simultaneously and spread due to the wind. This made it very difficult to extinguish them,” Angelov said.

Since the beginning of July, forest fires have been raging throughout North Macedonia, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.

Summers in North Macedonia are regularly disrupted by forest fires; in 2021, the fires destroyed around 10,000 hectares of forest.
