Boston police evacuate courthouse and arrest suspect who allegedly brandished a weapon

Boston police arrested a 23-year-old man on Friday who was seen with a loaded firearm outside Dorchester District Court, police said.

According to a statement from the Boston Police Department, officers arrested Roberto Valladares around 10:38 a.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and Tremlett Street on weapons charges.

Officers had left the courthouse and were waiting to attend a court hearing when they saw Valladares point the gun at the people standing in front of him, clip it into his waistband and continue walking down Tremlett Street, the statement said.

Valladares ran across Washington Street toward West Tremlett Street after being ordered to drop the weapon, authorities say.

Officers pursued Valladares into a fenced private yard, where he “ran to the back of the yard, threw the gun over a chain-link fence in a throwing motion, and immediately confronted officers in a fighting stance, ignoring all commands,” police said.

Officers said they recovered the firearm – a Glock 19 with a loaded 9mm cartridge in the barrel and 11 rounds in the magazine – and arrested Valladares. He is expected to be arraigned in District Court on charges of possession of a high capacity firearm, carrying a loaded weapon without a permit, carrying a firearm without a permit, unlawful possession of ammunition and assault with a dangerous weapon.
