Evacuated residents emotional after their homes were set on fire at apartment on Howell Mill Road – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department said the village of Bell Collier was evacuated due to a roof fire Saturday night.

Drone News 2 People flew over the scene as a large cloud of black smoke was visible coming from the top of the apartment complex on Howell Mill Road. One viewer even sent in a video of the smoke cloud while she was on a plane headed to Atlanta.

Residents of the complex stood in shock as their building burned.

Channel 2’s Christian Jennings spoke with residents about WSB tonight at 11pm who couldn’t believe what was happening.

Aja Syphoe was shaking and overcome with emotion.

“Now it’s like I don’t know what my home looks like right now,” Syphoe said.

She is grateful that she and her mother escaped safely.

“I had a hysterectomy. Two weeks after the surgery, I had to run downstairs because it was an emergency,” she said.

Cousins ​​Jehmoni Patton and Aaliyah Sherrod were already outside when the fire broke out.

“This man came running towards us, it was like the roof was on fire and we looked and the roof was literally “On fire,” they said.

“We then went back inside to get my brother and my dad and when we went in it got worse and the fire alarms went off and we went out and there was a big bang and everyone was running and everything and the firefighters came down because it was too much,” they continued.

Jackson McGinnity was eating next door with his family and couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“These four women started screaming that there was a big fire on the deck and a big explosion and fire was everywhere,” McGinnity said. “More explosions started happening and pieces were falling.”

Atlanta firefighters said everyone, including the pets, escaped safely.

Earlier Saturday, AFRD said it had rescued a dog.

Authorities said two floors collapsed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping people displaced by the fire.
