HENRY COUNTY, Alabama (WDHN) – A Henry County man was arrested after police say the carcasses of several dogs were found in the backyard of an apartment building.

Devone Edwards Tolbert, 26, was arrested on Wednesday, July 17, and charged with five counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

According to Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship, officers were called to a home off Highway 431 north of Abbeville on July 14 and found five dogs belonging to Tolbert dead and in varying stages of decomposition.

Blankenship says Tolbert was renting the house and moved out the day before his arrest. The dogs were found by the property owners when they tried to vacate the property.

This was reportedly not the first time Henry County Sheriff’s officials had dealings with Tolbert.

The sheriff told WDHN that officers were called to the same property in mid-June because the five dogs were reportedly malnourished. Authorities asked Tolbert to take better care of them and get them back in shape.
