19-year-old arrested in downtown Macon in connection with 2023 murder

The sheriff’s office said 19-year-old Brian Latrell Colbert Jr. was arrested at the Dempsey Apartments around 5 p.m. They had been looking for him since April.

MACON, Georgia – A man was arrested Sunday in connection with the death of a 50-year-old man, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Brian Latrell Colbert Jr., 19, was arrested without incident at the Dempsey Apartments in downtown Macon around 5 p.m.

Colbert is accused of murdering 50-year-old Brian Matthew Brown on November 26, 2023.

According to earlier reports, Brown was shot early this morning at the Lokchapee Landing Apartments in north Macon.

Brown went outside and shortly afterward, shots rang out. His wife, Sylvia Rose-Brown, said he was outside checking an alarm system near his truck.

When authorities arrived, he was found with a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office named Colbert as a suspect and began searching for him in late April. He was found three months later.

In addition to the murder charges, Colbert is charged with four counts of aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and child abuse. This last charge stems from a shooting that occurred on December 7, 2023, in the 1800 block of Cedar Avenue.

He is currently being held without bail in the Bibb County Jail.

The sheriff’s office also arrested an unnamed teenager in January in connection with the murder. He faces three additional charges of aggravated assault in connection with a shooting that occurred Jan. 11 in the 3800 block of Tela Place.

Anyone with information can call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
