Kingston graduate Zack Short picked up by Atlanta from Boston for cash

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Zack Short’s roller coaster season continued Thursday when he was acquired by the Atlanta Braves less than 24 hours after the Boston Red Sox designated him for assignment.

The Braves announced Thursday afternoon on X (formerly Twitter) that they had acquired Short from the Red Sox for cash.

Atlanta is the third team the former Kingston High baseball star has played for this season. Short, 28, started the year with the New York Mets but was traded to Boston on May 1 for cash.

The Mets designated Short for assignment on April 26 to make room for veteran designated hitter JD Martinez on their active roster.

The Braves are currently 22-12 and trail the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East by two games.

Short was picked up by the Braves after trading infielder Luis Guillorme to the Los Angeles Angels for cash on Thursday.

Short was used sparingly in his two stints with the Mets and Red Sox this year.

He appeared in 10 games for the Mets, hitting .111 with one hit in nine at-bats. He was 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in two games for the Red Sox.

Short spent parts of three seasons with the Detroit Tigers from 2021 to 2023. His most productive season came in 2023 when he appeared in 110 games for the Tigers, hitting .204 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. He had 45 hits, including nine doubles in 221 at-bats.

Short has a career major league batting average of .169 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Despite his lack of production at the plate, Short offers defensive versatility.

At the major league level, he played all three infield positions to the left of first base, as well as center field and right field. He also made a few appearances last season out of the bullpen for the Tigers when the game was out of reach for Detroit.

Short exhausted his final option year with the Tigers in 2023 and is out of options.

After a stellar career at Sacred Heart University, Short was selected in the 17th round of the 2016 draft by the Chicago Cubs. He played in the Cubs’ minor league organization for four seasons, before moving to their Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs, in 2019.

On August 31, 2020, Short was traded by the Cubs to the Tigers for outfielder Cameron Maybin.
