Delta flight makes emergency landing at JFK after bizarre incident with food on board

A Delta Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in New York after passengers were served a “spoiled” in-flight meal.

Flight 136 left Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport for Amsterdam on Tuesday evening, but was diverted to JFK Airport after the “contaminated” food was discovered.

According to data from tracking site FlightRadar24, the Delta plane was flying over Saint-Pierre and Miquelon – a French archipelago south of the Canadian island of Newfoundland – when it turned around.

The Airbus A330 landed safely at JFK at 4am this morning (July 3) and was met by paramedics who treated the affected passengers.

It is currently unknown how many of the 277 passengers on board consumed the spoiled meals and whether some travelers experienced symptoms of food poisoning.

One of the affected passengers, Virginia, wrote on Twitter/X: “@delta I need to know how you are going to get me to Amsterdam today. I am on the plane making an emergency landing at JFK because you served ‘contaminated’ food to the passengers. I don’t need hotel/meal vouchers, I need to arrive in Amsterdam today.”

A Delta Airlines spokesperson said in a statement: “Delta flight 136 from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York’s JFK airport early Wednesday morning after reports emerged that some of the in-flight meal service in the main cabin had been spoiled.

“Medical crews arrived at the aircraft to treat all affected passengers and crew. Delta’s food safety team has instructed our suppliers to immediately isolate the product and initiate a thorough investigation of the incident.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delays to their travels.”

The airline says it is “currently reviewing the situation” and will provide further updates throughout the day.
