Man dead after suspected electrocution at Smith Mountain Lake dock

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A man has died after allegedly being electrocuted on a private boat dock at Smith Mountain Lake, according to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.

Early in the morning of Thursday, July 4, Bedford County Emergency Services received a report of a possible drowning accident in Smith Mountain Lake.

When rescuers arrived on the scene, they were told by friends and family that there was a man in distress in the water. Two of them jumped into the water to help and immediately felt as if they had been electrocuted.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, the man was pulled from the water and resuscitated before emergency responders arrived.

The man was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office. The other two people suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.

According to officials, the man was visiting with friends and family from another state.

Although officials are waiting for a medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death, it is possible that electrocution was the result.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the incident.
