A Port Charlotte woman accuses a former MLB player of sexual abuse

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Craig Monroe, a former Major League Baseball player and analyst, denies allegations that he sexually assaulted a Port Charlotte woman more than two decades ago.

The alleged victim posted on social media that Monroe began sexually abusing her in the late 1990s when she was 12 years old and staying with her family in Port Charlotte while playing for the Texas Rangers minor league team at Charlotte Sports Park.

The woman claims the abuse continued for years and that Monroe began prostituting her to his friends and colleagues.

After a nine-year career in MLB, Monroe was most recently an analyst for the Detroit Tigers at Bally Sports and has since been removed from the commentary booth. Bally Sports and the Detroit Tigers sent a joint statement to the media saying:

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the allegations on social media and take them seriously. As previously stated, Mr. Monroe was not on the broadcast schedule and will remain so indefinitely. We will have no further comment and all questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe.”

Monroe has not personally commented on the allegations, but an attorney representing him issued a statement denying the woman’s claims.
