Police: Man who fled during trial in March arrested in Louisville

According to police, Vernon Jackson cut his ankle bracelet and ran away during his trial. He was arrested last week after police tried to stop him for having tinted windows.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – A Louisville man charged with attempted murder was captured by police last week, more than three months after police say he cut off the shackles that bound him to his home in the middle of the trial.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) arrested 42-year-old Vernon Jackson after a chase near Shively, just south of I-264, on June 20. According to court documents, police attempted to stop Jackson because his windows were too tinted.

Jackson then “made multiple turns” to escape police, got out of his vehicle and ran before he was caught on Oakwood Avenue, the complaint continues.

Authorities had been searching for Jackson since March 7, when he reportedly escaped from home confinement during a murder trial.

Jackson is accused of a shooting outside the Premier Gentleman’s Club on 7th Street Road in Shively on April 9, 2021. Jackson was allegedly inside the club when another shooting occurred, resulting in everyone being thrown out of the club.

Authorities said he became angry at not getting money back for the short time he spent at the club and chased a bouncer into an alley and shot him. His original warrant stated the bouncer was hit in the “extremities and abdomen” and was hospitalized. The bouncer identified Jackson, which led to his arrest.

Jackson was ordered to pay $35,000 bail and remain under house arrest until he is released on February 10, 2023.

His trial began in the spring of 2024, and he was ordered to appear in court on March 7. That day, the lawyers met and informed the judge that Jackson would not be in because he had removed his ankle monitor.

Jackson’s attempted murder case has been reopened and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 25. He is also due in court on July 1 on charges of cutting his ankle bracelet, fleeing from police and a misdemeanor related to tinted windows.

Both the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and the LMPD declined to give interviews about these developments Tuesday.
