Recall warning: Toyota Grand Highlander, Lexus TX

Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus have launched a recall and instructed dealers to stop selling the Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs (model year 2024) until urgent repairs can be made. Once dealers have repaired all vehicles on their lots, they will resume selling the cars.

Toyota says the side airbags on the driver’s side of its SUVs may not deploy as intended if the windows are rolled down, which could result in injuries in an accident.

The company says it is still “developing a solution to this issue,” so it’s not yet clear how dealers will fix it. But when engineers come up with a solution, dealers will install it for free.

In the meantime, we recommend that owners do not drive these cars with the driver’s side window rolled down.

The factory has suspended construction of both plants

Buyers interested in a Lexus TX or Toyota Grand Highlander may have to wait to buy one. Both SUVs are already in short supply at dealers, and Automotive News reports that factories have halted production while engineers work on an airbag safety solution.

By law, dealers do not charge fees for repairs as part of a recall.

Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. Although automakers try to reach every owner and ask them to bring the vehicle in for repairs, they rarely reach everyone. Millions of vehicles on American roads are subject to free repairs as part of the recall. To find out if your car is one of them, use the simple VIN tool in our Recall Center.
