Rescue operations underway following swimming accident in Genesee River

TOWN OF CANEADEA, NY (WKBW) – Recovery operations are underway following a suspected swimming accident involving a Belfast Central School student.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Allegany County sheriffs were called to the Genesee River in the town of Caneadea to search for a swimmer who had reportedly drowned.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office said several agencies assisted in the search for the swimmer but were unsuccessful. According to the sheriff, the search has now turned into a recovery operation.

Belfast Central School released the following statement early Friday morning:

“Good morning, Belfast families. Last night there was a swimming accident in the Genesee River involving a BCS student. As of now, the child has not been recovered. BCS will have counselors available for your child(ren) throughout the day. Although our 7th-12th grade students are not in school this year, we are here to provide support. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends. BCS will have counselors available in the building to meet and support our students and community throughout the day as needed. Residents are asked to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing.
