BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Seven drug overdose deaths were confirmed Monday in the Tonawanda and Buffalo areas, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office suspects these deaths are linked to a “particularly deadly form of fentanyl.”

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz first posted the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, shortly after 3:40 p.m. Monday, citing the Erie County Department of Health as the source. He said Narcan may not be enough to save a life because deaths could be “instantaneous.”

Poloncarz said more information will be provided by ECDOH soon.

Christopher Horvatits, public information officer for the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the deaths with a similar message Monday afternoon.
