Gordon Ramsay says he is ‘lucky to be here’ after having a ‘really bad’ bike accident

Gordon Ramsay stresses the importance of wearing a helmet while cycling after revealing he was involved in an accident in Connecticut last week.

“I had a really bad accident that really shook me up and honestly I’m glad to be here,” the celebrity chef and “Hell’s Kitchen” star said in a video shared on social media on Saturday.

He continued: “The incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses and hospital that have taken care of me this week have been amazing. But honestly, you have to wear a helmet.”

In a post on his Instagram page, Ramsay showed a “before” photo of himself with his bike as well as an “after” photo showing the damage to his helmet as a result of the accident.

“I don’t care how short the ride is, I don’t care that these helmets cost money, but they are essential. Even for children, they have to wear a helmet on short rides,” he said.

He said he had been in pain and it had been a “brutal week” before pulling back his chef’s jacket to reveal a massive bruise on his torso.

Ramsay, who prefaced his “important message” with a note about his love of cycling and triathlon, linked his call for cyclists to wear helmets to Father’s Day weekend and asked dads to do their part too.

In a social media post, he wrote that he was “fine” and had not broken any bones or sustained any major injuries, adding that his bruise “looks like a purple potato.”

“I am grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who cared for me and examined me, but I am most grateful for my helmet, which saved my life,” Ramsay wrote.

“Happy Father’s Day and take care, Gx.”
