FORECAST FIRST WARNING: Great heat and further heavy rain on the way

Minnesota’s weather agency has issued a first warning for Sunday. Father’s Day Sunday is expected to be mostly dry. The caveat: It will be hot and muggy, with highs reaching the low 90s in parts of the state. The heat and humidity could make it feel like high 90s to low 100s for most of the afternoon, and that’s why the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. During the evening and overnight hours, an approaching cold front could bring strong or severe storms, but the focus will be on the potential for heavy rain.

Speaking of rain, rain is expected for the first half of the weekend, and with it begins another active period of daily rain and storm chances across Minnesota. Saturday is likely to be the wetter and more widespread rain chance of the weekend. But even then, it won’t be a washout. Saturday will start dry, then rain chances will increase in the afternoon and evening, with most of the rain falling in the overnight hours. An isolated strong or severe thunderstorm is possible, but the focus is more on heavy rain and flooding threats, as another 1-2 inches of rain will fall for many.

Unsettled and stormy weather will continue throughout next week, with several inches of rain possible by next weekend.
