Sudanese activists speak of “40 dead” in artillery fire near Khartoum

Pro-democracy activists in Sudan reported on Friday that about 40 people were killed the previous day in “heavy artillery shelling” by paramilitary forces on Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city.

“So far, the death toll is estimated at 40 civilians and there are over 50 injured, some seriously,” said a statement by the Karari Resistance Committee on social media. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) blamed the shelling.

“There is still no exact number of victims in Omdurman,” said the organization, one of hundreds of similar grassroots groups in Sudan that are coordinating aid across the country.

“Most of the dead arrived at Al Nao University Hospital, others were buried in private hospitals or by their families,” the group added.

The attacks came a day after the RSF was accused of killing more than 104 people, including 35 children, in an attack on the village of Wad al-Noura in Al-Jazira state, south of Khartoum, on Wednesday.

Sudan has been ravaged by war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army under military chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF under the command of Burhan’s former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

In just over a year, the war has claimed thousands of lives. According to U.S. envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello, some estimates put the death toll as high as 150,000.

Since the war began, more than seven million people have fled their homes to other parts of Sudan. In addition, there are 2.8 million people who have already been displaced by previous conflicts in the country of 48 million inhabitants.

Fighting continues daily across the country, including in the capital. Both sides are accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians, indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and blocking humanitarian aid.
