Two people arrested after shooting in Columbus Junction

Two men were arrested in Columbus Junction Tuesday morning after police responded to reports of shots fired Monday afternoon.

According to a Columbus Junction Police press release, officers responded to an incident at 205 1/2 Main Street in Columbus Junction around 4:04 p.m. Monday.

It was determined that a physical altercation had occurred and a gun had been drawn. One of the people involved left the scene in a vehicle with a woman and a small child, the release said. As the person left the scene, others allegedly began firing multiple shots at him from the vehicle.

The vehicle and the Washington State Bank building were damaged, the press release said. No injuries were reported.

Elijah M. Doss, 25, of Burlington, was taken into custody at 6:53 a.m. Tuesday.

He is currently in the Louisa County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Jonathan Martinez, 24, of Winfield, was also arrested in connection with the incident. He was arrested at 6:21 a.m. Tuesday. He is charged with disturbing the peace (a misdemeanor), public intoxication (a misdemeanor) and endangering a child.

According to court documents, Doss and Martinez were allegedly involved in a physical altercation with another individual. According to the documents, the individual pulled out a gun and told Doss and Martinez to come back. Doss, who was armed himself, allegedly said, “I have one too,” and followed the individual down the stairs.

The report states the suspect pulled out his weapon again, prompting Doss to pull out a 9mm Glock pistol and fire at the vehicle as it drove away. Doss said he did not know how many times he fired, but officers reported finding 11 shell casings. Doss said he did not stop firing until the vehicle rounded the corner and was out of sight, court documents say.

He also said he did not remember the woman and toddler being in the vehicle, court documents say.

The vehicle reportedly had multiple bullet holes in it. Officers also found that a bullet had penetrated the glass of the bank’s main door.

Assisting with the case were the Columbus Junction Police Department, Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Louisa County District Attorney’s Office, Burlington Police Department and West Liberty Police Department.
