Weather warning: Heavy storms possible late in the day

Heat and humidity continue today, with thunderstorms late in the day. Memorial Day will start out warm and muggy, and heat and humidity will pick up again in the afternoon. Most of the day will be dry, but thunderstorms will develop later tonight, ahead of a cold front. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the Carolinas to a Slight Risk of Severe Weather (Level 2). Damaging winds (60+ mph) and large hail (>1.00″ diameter) are the greater threats, with a 15% chance. We also have a 2% risk of tornadoes. Some thunderstorms could develop inland during the afternoon. The greater chances of thunderstorms will be between 6 and 11 p.m. There will be no precipitation, but some thunderstorms could be strong to severe.

A cold front will approach and linger over the region through Tuesday. There will still be a slight chance of a few isolated showers on Tuesday. The cold front will move off the coast by Wednesday morning, bringing drier air behind it. Temperatures will also cool down comfortably. By the end of the work week, temperatures will drop to just above 27 degrees and dew points will be lower; therefore less humid.
