Severe storm triggers red alert in NYC on Memorial Day. Here’s the first warning.

NEW YORK — A Red alert applies to Monday night due to the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms

Memorial Day weekend got off to a great start on Saturday and the sunny and warm trend will continue on Sunday.

A few showers are possible later Saturday evening, but they are not expected to be heavy or widespread. Lows will be mostly around 15 degrees Celsius, with some fog possible later.

Forecast for Sunday

Sunday is set to be a phenomenal day with highs of between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius. Although temperatures will be cooler along the coast, it will be a perfect day for the beach, especially as there is little chance of rip currents.

Here’s what to expect for the rest of Memorial Day weekend.

As humidity increases later in the day, isolated showers or thunderstorms are possible. Otherwise, there should be plenty of sunshine.

Forecast for Monday

Unfortunately, the great weather on Memorial Day will almost certainly disappear. Scattered showers are expected from the morning hours through the late afternoon.

This is what awaits you on Monday evening.

After 6 p.m., the Red Alert will be reached. Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected until midnight. The storms could contain torrential rain, damaging winds and hail. A very moist air mass will be present at this time, so the storms will have a lot of moisture to contend with and therefore could cause flash flooding. The greatest risk of flooding will be in the areas northwest of the city. Highs will only reach the mid-70s.
