Mother of 21-year-old found dead says he was a victim of domestic violence – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE – A mother has a message for others after her son was killed in domestic violence.

On Friday evening, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police confirmed that they had found the remains of 21-year-old Sam Haugh, who was reported missing earlier this month.

Investigators believe Haugh’s friend killed him before he killed himself.

Haugh had only moved to Charlotte in April to be with his boyfriend Michael Olarte.

On Tuesday, police found Haugh’s remains in a wooded area in Mecklenburg County. After the autopsy, the medical examiner said Haugh had been shot and ruled his death a homicide.

His family reported him missing on May 5. Olarte’s body was found the same day. Police say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators believe Olarte may have injured Haugh before dumping his body in the woods.

Haugh’s mother believes her son is another victim of domestic violence and she is warning other families.

“Everyone should be aware that this can be a problem in any relationship. If someone shows signs of controlling behavior early in a relationship, that is a serious warning sign that everyone around that person should be aware of,” Jennifer Haugh told veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts.

She further said that she believes her son may have been manipulated by his friend.

But Haugh says she is grateful she did not have to go through a trial.
