The Foreign Ministry offers consular assistance and protection to the journalist Ignacio Rosaslanda, who was attacked in Berlin

  • The Mexican Embassy in Germany is closely following the reporter’s complaint of assault and abuse of office.

On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mexican Embassy in Germany is offering consular assistance and protection to Mexican journalist Ignacio Rosaslanda, who was beaten by German police yesterday.

During the eviction of demonstrators from the Humboldt University in Berlin, the journalist, who had identified himself as a reporter for the Berliner Zeitung and always behaved peacefully, was violently overpowered by the local police. He suffered minor injuries that are not life-threatening.

Mexico’s ambassador to Germany, Francisco Quiroga Fernández, met the journalist at the Mexican embassy. During the meeting, Ignacio Rosaslanda handed the ambassador the video of the aggression and said that the police officer who made the arrest not only prevented him from reporting and used unnecessary force, but also distorted the facts, conspired with other police officers to fabricate witness statements to support the false version, and denied the reporter the immediate medical attention that the paramedics wanted to provide him.

The Mexican Embassy showed the video to the Foreign Ministry and will support the lawsuit filed by the reporter and the newspaper for assault and abuse of office.

The Embassy will closely monitor the legal process to ensure that the aggression is investigated and appropriate sanctions are imposed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its commitment to protecting the Mexican community abroad.
