First weather alert for Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Be on alert for likely severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening!

Thursday afternoon and evening are now declared a First alert weather day. A strong cold front will move east. When the front impacts a very warm and moist air mass, isolated thunderstorms occur. The Storm Prediction Center has placed central Virginia at a severe weather level of two out of five as of Tuesday. However, this will could be updated by Thursday.

Any thunderstorm can produce damaging wind gusts and large hail. These will be the main threats.

The overall risk of tornadoes is currently low.

Thunderstorms moving over already very wet ground due to earlier rainfall this week may also cause localized flooding.

This Tuesday and Wednesday there will only be isolated showers, rain and thunderstorms. The risk of severe weather is minimal through late Thursday afternoon and evening.

Wednesday will be the hottest day.

A cooling trend for Mother’s Day weekend and overall dry conditions.

  • Tuesday: Clouds and hazy sun. Warm and humid with scattered showers and a risk of thunderstorms this afternoon. High temperatures in the low to mid 80s.
  • Tuesday Night: Slight chance of rain. Otherwise partly cloudy, mild and humid with patchy fog. Lows will be in the low to mid 60s.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, hotter and humid. There is a risk of showers and storms in isolated cases. Highs will be in the upper 80s to low 90s. Lows in the 60s.
  • Thursday: First alert weather day for isolated severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorm can produce damaging wind gusts and large hail. The risk of tornadoes is low. Isolated flooding is also possible. Highs in the lower 80s. Lows in the 50s.
  • Friday: Chance of persistent showers. Mostly cloudy with highs in the lower 70s. Lows near 50 degrees.
  • Saturday: Partly sunny and cooler. Highs upper 60s to lower 70s. Lows in the 40s.
  • Mother’s Day, Sunday: Partly sunny. Isolated risk of showers. Otherwise mostly dry. Highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny and milder. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s.
