Teenager dies in ORV incident in Lake County Michigan

PLEASANT PLAINS TOWNSHIP – A 16-year-old male was pronounced dead Friday after being involved in an ORV incident.

On Friday, May 17, at 5:48 p.m., Lake County officials were dispatched to 76th Street and U.S. Forest Service 6250 in Pleasant Plains Township and found a 16-year-old boy who had been thrown from his dirt bike and was found unconscious and out of breath.

According to a press release, bystanders on the scene had begun CPR before first responders arrived, which continued when first responders arrived.

“The victim was transported to Corewell Health – Reed City (Hospital) where he was later pronounced dead,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office news release said. “A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim struck a guide wire that was anchored to a utility pole directly beneath his helmet. This was removed and is believed to be the main cause of the injuries.”

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Lake County 911, Michigan State Police, Lake Township Fire Department, Pleasant Plains Fire Department and the Mid-Michigan Medical Examiner Office.
