What players said Friday about the tragic incident and Scottie Scheffler’s arrest

Early Friday morning in front of Valhalla Golf Club, around 6 a.m. ET, John Mills was hit by a shuttle bus and died at the scene of the accident. Mills, a Louisville resident, worked as a salesman at the PGA Championship, according to the PGA of America.

After the fatal incident Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police as he attempted to divert traffic and enter the club property.

Here are some local actors’ reactions, including Scheffler, to the tragedy and arrest (will be updated throughout the day).

Scottie Scheffler:
“First and foremost, my condolences go out to Mr. Mills’ family. I can’t imagine what they’re going through this morning. One day he goes to the golf course to watch a tournament. A few moments later he tries to cross the street and now he is no longer with us. I can’t imagine what they’re going through. My heart – I feel for them. I’m sorry.

“My situation is being clarified. It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding.”

Xander Schauffele:
“First of all, the fatal accident is definitely the worst. I’m sure Scottie would agree. Nothing should ever happen to anyone who comes anywhere near a golf tournament. That’s for starters.

“Then you felt like it was some kind of prank or something when you saw a mugshot of Scottie. I know Scottie pretty well; We share a physical therapist and have been playing golf for a few years. I know that he is a solid guy and that he has no ill intentions towards anyone. Hopefully he comes out unscathed. But Scottie’s a good guy, so hopefully he’ll be okay.”

Collin Morikawa:
“First of all, it is unfortunate for the person who passed away earlier today. I don’t think it’s talked about enough or at all. My wishes and prayers are for the blessing of this family.”

Austin Eckroat:
“I ended up getting out of my car, walking a mile and a half and having my wife drive the car in. It was a strange morning. Something I’ve never experienced before. It was a tragedy followed by a strange incident.

“I was wondering how bad the incident was because the traffic was so bad we were at a standstill, so I called the local news station to find out what was going on and the first thing I saw, was that Scottie had been dropped off in handcuffs and I was wondering what on earth was going on. It was a strange morning.”

Min Woo Lee:
“I don’t know, I was a little shocked by what happened in both scenarios. I mean, during the round it was hard to even concentrate and I had to be careful to keep my head in the game because I didn’t want that to happen to anyone and yeah, of course what happened to Scottie was very scary, too. Hopefully he’s okay.”

Harris English:
“Apparently I got here this morning, then the news came that Scottie was arrested and so on. We had no idea what was going on. That could have been any of us. We all walk the same path when we come to the club.

“Extremely unfortunate. You never want to hear about a person losing their life taking the course. It’s just terrible. We’re out here playing a golf tournament and suddenly someone has been killed outside the entrance, which is very unfortunate and our condolences go out to this family.”

Mark Hubbard:
“Yeah, I mean, I was kind of late so I didn’t really get any of that stuff on the way there. But from, I don’t know, the whole situation perspective, I thought the saddest thing about it was the whole thing was about Scottie being arrested and all that, and like I said, I’m glad he’s okay and stuff, but I mean, someone died this morning and we were out there on the track, I bet 90 percent of the people out here don’t even know that happened. This isn’t Scottie’s fault at all, but I mean, that was the real tragedy today. So I don’t even know all the details about it, but I hope whoever it was, their family is doing as well as it can be and my thoughts and prayers go out to them.

“I think it’s a strange world we live in. I think with social media sometimes important things can get lost. I don’t really know how to fix this. I don’t know what the overall message is, it’s sad that this happened and my condolences go out to this family.”
