1 man dead, 9-year-old injured in Philadelphia shooting

A man was fatally shot and two other people were injured in a shooting in Philadelphia, including a young girl, police said.

The man was found dead in a bullet-riddled car in the 2800 block of Passyunk Avenue around 8:50 p.m. Thursday. He was shot once in the head and again in the neck. His Chevy Malibu was hit on the passenger side at least 10 times, CBS News reported.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. He was 23 years old, but his name has not yet been released.

A 9-year-old girl was also in the vehicle at the time, but she managed to escape, according to Small. She eventually met a good Samaritan who took her to a nearby police station. From there, she was taken to Children’s Hospital and treated for a graze wound, ABC Philadelphia reported. Her condition was stable early Friday morning.

According to the preliminary investigation, the girl is related to the 23-year-old shooting victim, Small said.

Around the same time, a 46-year-old man was also shot in the back and taken to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, Small said. He was found in another vehicle, an Acura, in a parking lot near the 6100 block of West Passyunk Avenue. Authorities found 26 spent shell casings on the nearby Passyunk Avenue Bridge, which crosses the Schuylkill River, and therefore believe the shooting occurred there, Small said.

The 23-year-old victim was either able to drive a short distance after being shot or his vehicle floated across the bridge before coming to a stop on a median, police said.

The motive for the fatal shooting remained unclear Friday morning and no suspects were arrested. Small noted that there are police cameras in the area and at some businesses that authorities hope will help with the investigation.
